MWRT – 2025 – Road to Montana

This day was highlighted by the short visit to Devils Tower. Anyone who was a child of the seventies will instantly recognize this iconic outcropping of granite. Devils Tower is a butte, laccolithic, composed of igneous rock in the Bear Lodge Ranger District of the Black Hills, near Hulett and Sundance in Crook County, northeastern Wyoming, above the Belle Fourche River. It rises 1,267 feet above the Belle Fourche River, standing 867 feet from summit to base. Wikipedia

In 1977 Steven Spielberg release the Richard Dreyfuss movie, “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”. For the time, this was an epically entertaining feature film. I highly recommend it for rewatching if your my age, or watching for the very first time. This movie made a permanent connection between Devils Tower and aliens 🙂

As I made my way into Wyoming and then into Montana the terrain continued to transform as the elevation above sea level increased and the farther north west I drove. The country is highly suited for ranch land. Crops tend toward very rich feed hay and and massive wheat land fields. The grasslands for grazing cattle were even irrigated with massive circular irrigation rigs. Rivers running through the ranch lands were a beautiful feature and I tried to capture some of the magnificence of this land with my iPhone camera as I was driving along.

After being on the road for 11 hours I arrived in Helena Montana where I will be picking up Kathy at the regional airpot on the morrow. Then off to Glacier.
